What is optimal wellness?

While optimal wellness doesn't seem achievable to someone with chronic or life-limiting illness, optimal wellness is the highest level of health for them. Optimal wellness focuses on the physical, emotional, spiritual, and social well-being of the individual in order to improve quality of life during serious health challenges. This may include reducing symptoms and improving quality of life by using alternative medicine.

What is a chronic illness?

A chronic illness is one that is persistent and typically last for more than three months. A chronic illness is one that may be preventable and treatable, but cannot be cured by medication. Examples of chronic illnesses, which include some autoimmune disorders, are: Alzheimer's and other dementias, asthma, bipolar mood disorder, cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), chronic kidney disease, Crohn's disease, diabetes, epilepsy, heart disease, HIV/AIDS, hypertension, lupus, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and ulcerative colitis. There are many more.

What is a life-limiting illness?

Life-limiting illness is an incurable disease that will shorten a person's life; however, with proper treatment, they may live actively for many years. Life-limiting illness may include many on the list of chronic illnesses as each disease progresses. Life-limiting illness may require palliative care, which is an approach that assists those facing the challenges of living with life-limiting illness.

What is alternative medicine?

Alternative medicine consists of any treatment or therapy that is not considered standard practice in conventional or Western medicine. Alternative therapies include a vast array of treatments to achieve optimal wellness such as affirmative prayer, aromatherapy and essential oils, Ayurveda, energy healing such as Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT/Tapping), Reiki and crystal Reiki, functional medicine, meditation, spiritual healing, or body movements such as QiGong, Tai Chi, or Yoga.

What is an abundant life?

Many view abundance as financial independence, security, or wealth. Abundance means so much more. An abundant life means having a lot of something that is desirable such as optimal wellness. At Light of Abundance Wellness Coaching, abundance is about having a better quality of life, making healthy choices that may reduce the symptoms of their chronic or life-limiting illness, or experiencing a deeper level of self-compassion. Self-care leads to abundance in many areas of life.
